When is a chocolate website more than just a chocolate website? When it’s a chocolate website.

Sagres, Portugal’s leading beer brand, recently brewed a new product: Sagres Preta Chocolate, a chocolate flavoured stout beer. They then challenged their digital agency to come up with something equally as original to promote it. What they came up with is as close to genius as I can think of.

Dawn of the Digital Age – Get hip to Social Media or go extinct.

Almost 50% of consumers follow brands on Facebook; is yours one of them?

Current trends show social media marketing is gaining precedence with some brand’s Facebook sites seeing more traction than their websites. Coca Cola boasts over 10 million Facebook fans while its website’s unique visitor stats have fallen more than 40% to 242,000.

New research out of the digital consultancy, Beyond, conducted in the US and UK, shows that 46% of consumers follow at least one brand on a social network with almost a quarter (23%) stating they would rather receive information from brand’s via Facebook, than from a brand’s own website (21%)

So why are people following brands anyway? (more…)

lab[au] is a design studio founded in 1997 and based in Brussels. They mainly create interactive artworks, audiovisual performances and scenographies, for which they develop their own software and interfaces. For a 2008 project the group transformed the Dexia Tower in Brussels into a giant weather report, using LED’s in each window to create something pretty stunning.

IBM cruises a Sci-Fi wave of awesomeness.

Okay…so this is pretty super-cool.

IBM are going all Sci-Fi with their new interactive billboard which they’re trialing as part of their Smarter Planet initiative (designed to make more efficient systems using the latest technology). The billboard changes its appearance based on what the person standing in front of it is wearing. It uses sensors and LEDs to dynamically update its color, urging the viewer to consider how technology could improve supply chain systems and retail experiences today.

So is this all just a great big multi-coloured nonsense or is there real merit in it?…

ar

OK, so following my last two posts the question has been asked, or at least the point made, that it’s interesting but what is AR?
I thought this would have been clear? Perhaps clicking on a few of the links would elaborate, but for those who are a little click shy and just like reading my blog, yes all three of you, here is an attempt to put AR in a nutshell. It’s probably a big nut.

So what is AR?

AR stands for augmented reality. AR is the term used to describe the combination of the real and the virtual worlds. It is essentially information superimposed or augmented in some way with a real world environment, often using camera technology, but sometimes that real world might be a map or other application. It is about combining information to useful effect, some applications being developed are clearly more useful than others, some are purely playful. But does playtime not qualify as useful? I think it does. (more…)

the-future

In my last post, ARound the corner, introducing AR, or augmented reality, I was hoping to see AR break into the mainstream, becoming a ubiquitous media rather than an also ran.

What didn’t occur to me at the time was in times gone by, and I mean recent times, not even as far back at the vhs vs beta wars, that the emergence of new technologies and ideas was largely dependent upon the companies developing them being successful, perhaps the marketing of the idea or product, perhaps the timing, perhaps something else? These companies were the elite few who had the budgets and teams to develop such ideas and take the financial risk that comes with such an investment of time and effort. (more…)

ARound the corner

One of the things I love about working in digital media is that things never ever stand still, there is always a new media, a new format, better compression, a new idea. That’s not to say that all new ideas or media are good, many arrive, get 5 minutes of exposure and fade just as quickly.

With the holidays drawing to a close and most offices back into full swing, now is the start of the seminar and presentation season. Companies are dusting off their presentation media and are planning how to communicate information to an audience. This might be an internal presentation, client meetings, a luncheon debate or a larger conference.

Whatever the presentation format the challenge is always the same. How do I say what I am trying to say whilst retaining the interest of the audience and using the right tool for the job? (more…)
